District Governor's Message

Ventura's 100th Anniversary Celebration with Rotaract Advisor Dale Jaedtke and Rotaractors PE Rachel Wintz and Loreal Spear
June is Rotary Fellowships month. Rotary Fellowships are international, independently organized groups of Rotarians, Rotary partners, and Rotaractors who share a common interest or vocation. This month is recognition of the opportunity to have fun, make new friends around the world and enhance the experience of Rotary that belonging to a Rotary Fellowship enables.  To learn more about Rotary Fellowships log on to www.rotary.org/fellowships.
This is the last news article for the 2018-19 leadership. It has been an honor to be your District Governor.  My husband Richard and I have been blessed by this time to lead and work with all of you. I could not be more proud of our accomplishments and the 72 clubs and Club Presidents in District 5240 have been engaged and very active in their communities and the world. Every Governor says the best part of this job is visiting the clubs and observing the projects and commitment of Rotarians to “Be the Inspiration”. It is so true.

The District leadership staff have been so supportive to the clubs and members. All of the Assistant Governors have been very active in their areas. All of the Avenue of Service Chairs are engaged and have actively reached out to do whatever it takes to help the clubs be successful. There is always more that we could have done, but isn’t that just what every volunteer thinks??

Lastly the executive staff – our Chief Operating Officer Scott Phillips, the sassy Chief of “Stuff” Jacque Jans, the overworked treasurer Gregg Burt, the Public Image/Communication Officer Ryan Mills,  the Charitable Foundation Director Barry Vanderkelen, our financial committee chair Patrick Hoffman - whose jobs require attention every day – you have my undying gratitude and love. Thanks for making me look good (which is sometimes a TALL order).

Richard and I love you all. Thank you for the memories.

Avenue of Service Spotlight - New Generations
It has been a busy year and one of firsts for D5240 New Generations...so please indulge me as I ruminate with you by highlighting just a few of these accomplishments.

The very first week of July, we held a District-wide New Generations Board Retreat, community service project and social. Interactors and Rotaractors came together from all over our District to clean up and mulch The SLO Rotary Park alongside Rotarians and DG Sandi and PDG
John Weiss. Thank you to President Jim Eaton for helping to organize the clean-up. After the garden project and during lunch, a joint Interact and Rotaract Board Retreat was held to go over the year’s goals, board member’s duties and responsibilities, sharing ideas, and mentoring. Afterwards, everyone headed to
Pismo Beach to enjoy a fun social complete with loads of food and a sand castle contest. A great bonding experience to kick off the new Rotary year!

District Conference:
A first for our District was including New Generations in our District Conference. A full day interwoven with the Rotarian Conference for meals. Our young members added energy to the already festive atmosphere. The New Gens Conference itself was a packed agenda, a hugely successful event attended by well over 100 Interactors and Rotaractors creating a culture of inclusiveness replete with original skits written and performed by teams of Rotaract and Interact members from throughout our District. Each team performed a theme representing a Rotary focus of service where much fun and hilarity ensued. We did a community service project by assembling over 400 dignity bags for the Homeless Shelter with hotel-sized hygiene products collected and donated by Rotarians. Thank you to our District Community Service Director, Fernando Aguirre, for delivering these much needed dignity bags.

The Rotarians and speakers were inspired by our high schoolers and young adults in
attendance and they, in turn, were enthusiastically welcomed. A warm thank you to our speakers: RI Foundation Director, Steven Cory Solomon, Rotary International VP, John Matthews, PDG Wade Nomura, PDG Deepa Willingham, and District Governor Sandi Schwartz. A teeshirt design contest was held months before with the rule that at least one Rotaractor and one Interactor had to collaborate on the design. The winning team: Centennial Interact Vice President, Kennedy Beltran and President Elect Nominee for Bakersfield Rotaract, Bethany McKanna, got a huge surprise at the Conference when attendees received their teeshirts with their winning design on it.

New Generations Conference guest speakers were presented with a tee-shirt signed by the Interactors and Rotaractors in attendance. Zone Director John Matthews and our DG Sandi Schwartz put theirs on right away and wore them all day, much to the delight of all! Thank you Group 9 Rotary Clubs for donating the teeshirts and Don Tillquist of Coastal Embroidery. The New Generations Conference team was comprised of Rotarians, Rotarators and Interactors, another great inter-generational collaboration!

Rotaract Club Presidents Monthly Conference:
Implemented All-Rotaract Presidents Monthly Conference Call. These calls have
created cohesion and opened up lines of communication and encouraged collaboration between our District’s Rotaract Clubs as well as keeping our District appraised on all their activities. Our Rotaractors are rock stars!

Appointed a Rotaract Liaison, Parker Jellison and Interact Liaison, Tanveer Dhaliwal to those District positions. By giving Rotaract and Interact a voice at the District level on the New Generations team, we empowered our younger members and engendered trust, collaboration and encouraged cross-mentoring.

PRLS programs for Rotaract and Interact were held in many areas throughout our
District. Thank you, Wade Nomura. I’m sure this successful trend of educating our youth on all things Rotary will continue. It gives them a reason and a purpose to be of service.

YES! Youth Empowerment Summit:
I had the privilege of attending and bringing Interact students to participate in SimiYES! at the Simi Rotary Park with Rotaractors and Rotarians from Bakersfield. SimiYES! Was a success, congratulations Simi Rotary Clubs on a great program.

KernYES! was also a great success...A first for D5240 in Kern County with 13 Rotary
Clubs and community members collaborating to support and volunteer for KernYES!
Also, the KernYES! Board of Directors is comprised of hard working Rotarians and
Rotaractors. This year, KernYES! has been recognized by the community and
nominated by the Chamber of Commerce for a prestigious award. The awards gala
takes place June 1st.

The Third Annual KernYES! Is Saturday, February 29, 2020...hope to see you there!

We welcomed 4 new Clubs to D5240 and received Charters from RI for:
2 Rotaract Clubs:
  • UC Santa Barbara - Santa Barbara Rotary Club
  • North San Luis Obispo Rotaract Club -Paso Robles, Atascadero, and Paso Robles Sunrise Rotary Clubs
2 Interact Clubs:
  • Mira Monte High School - Bakersfield Twilight Rotary Club
  • Kern River Valley High School - Kern River Valley Rotary Club
I had the privilege of putting a significant indentation of my posterior on DG Sandi’s co-pilot seat of the “Guv-Mobile.” I accompanied our DG on visits to our District’s Rotaract Club meetings, what fun our young adults are and so amazed at their heart for service! By scheduling DG visits and attending their meetings, Rotaractors received the very important message that Rotaract Clubs are indeed true Rotary partners. I also represented D5240 New Generations at your various Rotary Club meetings, I thank DG Sandi for the opportunity...oh, what fun it’s been getting to know my fellow Rotarians and seeing you in your element!

This year 6 Rotaractors represented D5240 by attending the Big West Conference in
Portland, Oregon. They came back excited to share with their peers all the valuable
information they garnered during the Rotaract Monthly Conference Call. President Yuan Xie of UCSB Rotaract published a great article and photos of their trip to Big West in our District’s monthly newsletter.

The Inaugural Rotaract Leadership Retreat “RLR” or “Roller” will be held June 8-9th at Rancho el Chorro in San Luis Obispo. The packed two-day retreat, exclusively for
Rotaract, will be fun with many educational workshops. Rotarian workshop facilitators are paired with a Rotaract facilitator to engender mentoring. RLR is designed as an overnight retreat to help connect and forge friendships along with workshops tailored specifically for Rotaract, it is the goal of RLR to equip our Rotaract members with the information and tools to help them lead their clubs in the coming year.

In conclusion:
In my years working with youth I have found that they seek guidance, for us to listen without judgement, where they are free to express themselves and open to receive our mentoring. Unlike the misguided belief of the “older” generation, these young people will gladly put down and indeed, look away from electronic devices if we give them our time, undivided attention and fully share ourselves with them.

My goal and my hope; that our young people understand that we, Rotarians and the
District, value and celebrate their contributions. We accomplish this by educating and
including them as partners in everything we do as a Club, a Rotarian and a District.
Let’s mentor with purpose, by emulating, by building up and by stoking and sharing that same passion for service that we Rotarians already posses. Only then will we see an increase in percentage of young people desirous and deciding to continue the path of “Service Above Self” on to Rotaract and Rotary.

...If not you, who? The future is not tomorrow, it is here.
Let’s all work together to build that future...now!
Thank you for allowing me to serve.

Stories From Around the District
Diversity in Action - SLO Reads
On Monday, April 29, 2019, The Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo, with the help of the United Way of San Luis Obispo County and Rotary Clubs throughout the area, led a project called Diversity in Action – SLO Reads to celebrate "Día", a national library program that fosters literacy for all children from all backgrounds. Día, also known as El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) is a commitment to include and celebrate all cultures through literacy.  Rotarians and other volunteers went to all ten elementary schools in the San Luis Coastal Unified School District and read books of culturally diverse stories to children in kindergarten to 6th grade. The volunteers purchased and donated the books to the classroom libraries and made financial donations to purchase hundreds of additional books. The project was as rewarding to the readers as it was to the children, and the club plans to make this an annual project.
Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise Community Service Project
On April 6th, 2019, the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise got together to form a team of hardworking men and women.  Our project for 2019 was to assist The Free Clinic of Simi Valley in getting ready to open their doors for business.  The Free Clinic of Simi  Valley has provided continuous charitable service since it's establishment in 1971 as a non-profit, volunteer-based community service organization.  The mission of the Free Clinic of Simi Valley is to provide medical care, counseling, dental and legal assistance to individuals and families in need, regardless of their ability to pay.  This includes those of all ages, ethnicities, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds, who are unable to use traditional sources within the community.  Typically, the clients of the clinic are the uninsured and the underserved.

Party With a Purpose
When they learned that the Rotary Club of Westlake Village Sunrise was organizing a Fundraiser built upon the theme of Senior Prom, the Rotaract Clubs of Cal Lutheran University and Conejo Valley sprung into action. Embracing the opportunity of selling corsages and boutonnieres to the Prom patrons to raise funds, they accepted Westlake Sunrise’s request for help.  Knowing that both Rotaract Clubs had modest funds to work with, their flower supplies were sponsored by Felix Wang of the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks and their other supplies were sponsored by Westlake Sunrise. Sunrise’s Next Gen Chair Don Martin and his wife, Susan,  were educated in Millennials musical tastes when they attended the corsage-making pizza party at Cal Lutheran, with over 10 Rotaractors from both clubs attending.  At the Prom Event the following evening, 8 members from both Rotaract Clubs sold the corsages and helped to sell raffle tickets.  By the end of the night, they were all dancing together. The 2 Rotaract clubs divided up the near $600 raised from this effort.  This project was a success on many levels, especially in the cooperation and teamwork between the clubs involved.

R/C of Atascadero Donates $25K to finish "Parents for Joy" Project
The Rotary Club of Atascadero planned an effort that has spanned 6 years! The project has galvanized the city of Atascadero like no other project. They needed to raise $1,200,000 to complete the "Parents for Joy" project. CLICK HERE for details on the project. The project is now open thanks to a huge donation of land and money by the city and over $500,000.00 in local donations. Past President, Tom Zirk (2015-16) set aside $7,000 during his term for this project. This year, current president, Don Idler was also determined to finish his year by being a major donor. Their fundraisers this year “Cork & Cap Benefit” and the "Crab Feed and Auction" garnered enough to supply the balance to their foundation to write a check for the remaining $25,000! The Rotary Club of Atascadero pulled together and worked very hard to do this as this was not their only donation to the community and support of other clubs.

Hap Rapp Memorial Track Meet
The Hap Rapp Memorial Track Meet is the oldest community service project of the Camarillo Rotary Club. The Meet began in 1959, when a group of local Rotarians created an organized track and field competition for Camarillo boys and girls at the elementary and junior high school levels. There were only a few schools then, and not too many entrants, but over the years, the Meet has grown to keep pace with the community. The Meet was named the Hap Rapp Memorial Track Meet in 1988, in honor of the late Rotarian Hap Rapp, who devoted so much of his time and talents to the event over the years.

Rotary Club of Conejo Valley and Others Help Provide Life-Saving Heart Surgeries To Numerous Children
Recently the Rotary Club of Conejo Valley, collaborated with several organizations, including Rotary Club of Nuevo Leon, Gift For Life, Cardio Chavitos, international surgeons, and anesthesiologists to help perform life saving surgeries on approximately 31 children in Monterrey Mexico. Diego Velasquez, International Service Chair for Conejo Valley’s club, worked together with his club and the various groups to get a Rotary global grant approved to further support this incredible mission. Early November 2018, Rotarian, Diego Velasquez, along with numerous volunteers arrived in Monterrey Mexico amongst the captivating views of the mountains eager to get their project started to help these less fortunate children in dire need. They visited the world class Hospital Zambrano Hellion where surgeries took place and had a pre-surgery meeting with the local Rotary Club of Nuevo Leon, Gift for Life, Cardio Chavitos, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other volunteers. Children checked in and had an emotional, high-spirited meeting with the volunteers.  All in all surgeries went very well and these lovely children got a second chance at life thanks to Rotary and the other amazing organizations’ contributions. As Rotarians toured the city after there was a sign on the street that summed up the trip, “Vivir Es Increible”, which means that "To Live Is Incredible!"

Lost At Sea Memorial in Cayucos
For the past ten years, Cayucos Rotary has hosted the “Lost at Sea” memorial on Memorial Day, to remember those who served as well as civilians who had been lost at sea. The memorial is held at 1500 hours every year at the Cayucos Pier.

Each year, there are devotional and ceremonial tributes following the national anthem and welcome remarks. Military veterans come dressed in their uniforms and are honored.  Music follows the tolling of the bell, and the meaning of the “Missing Man” and the symbolism of the wreath are explained to the audience. Benediction continues and everyone marches out to the pier for blessings of the wreath. The wreath is then tossed into the ocean, and the rifle salute follows. The ceremony closes with the flyover of war planes. It’s an emotionally charged and touching event, and not to be missed.

The Peace Academy of Science and Arts
The Peace Academy of the Sciences and Arts is a non-profit educational program with the goal to inspire a community of lifelong learners who become caretakers and peace leaders for our world.  Last summer, we provided an amazingly successful 4 week full-day enrichment program for over 40 children in SLO County.

For the summer of 2019, we plan to open our doors to serve 50% more students with new and exciting curriculum. New and returning children will embark on a 4-week learning journey, together, yet each in their own unique way, to become scientists, critical thinkers, authors, cooks, performers, coders, and problem solvers while having tons of fun!
