We recently had the opportunity to participate in a career panel at Golden Valley High, and it turned into a meaningful experience for both the students and our group. Rather than focusing on titles or credentials, the conversation centered on real-world perspective—sharing that it’s okay not to have your entire career path figured out, and that qualities like work ethic, consistency, and coachability often matter more than where you start. Each panelist brought a different background and journey, which helped reinforce the idea that there isn’t a single “right” path to success. Some of us had completed college degrees, others went straight to work after highschool and built successful businesses. It's the desire to put service above self that brings us all together as Rotarians.

GV is a high school near the southern outskirts of town of Bakersfield. It's mostly surrounded by industrial work yards and agriculture fields. This is a predominantly latino and low income area. It's been an honor for our club to be a sponsor of their Interact club for several years.

What stood out most was what happened after the discussion ended. Several students came up to continue the conversation, ask thoughtful questions, and exchange contact information. It was a reminder that these moments can have a lasting impact when students feel encouraged and supported. We closed by emphasizing the importance of networking—that they now have access to a group of professionals willing to help, and that taking the initiative to reach out can open doors in ways they may not yet realize. This was a great experience that we hope to continue into the future.
