“Aprons in Bloom” Brings Families Together to Equip Students with Summer Cooking Skills
Bakersfield North Rotary and Standard School District Partner on Hands-On Nutrition Event Ahead of Summer Break

Bakersfield North Rotary and Standard School District hosted “Aprons in Bloom,” a family-centered event designed to teach elementary school students how to prepare simple, nutritious meals they can make at home during summer break.  Held in the Standard School multipurpose room, the event combined hands-on cooking instruction with community resources, fitness and fun—sending students home not only with new skills but with groceries to put them to use.

Families arrived to a welcoming atmosphere and began their experience at a at a decorating table, where students personalized the reusable bags they would later fill with ingredients.  From there, high school student volunteers escorted small groups of elementary students through five cooking stations, each focused on a different simple, kid-friendly meal they could replicate at home.  The peer-to-peer mentorship added a layer of leadership development for the high school volunteers while making the experience more engaging for the younger participants.

Beyond the cooking stations, the event offered something for every member of the family.  The Blue Zones Project provided interactive games that reinforced healthy living principles, while a live DJ kept the energy high throughout the evening.  Zumba classes invited both students and parents onto the floor for movement and fun, and representatives from Kern Family Health Care were on hand to answer health-related questions and connect families with resources.  WinCo Foods generously provided all the food featured at the stations and sent families home with the ingredients they needed to recreate the meals in their own kitchens.

“Summer break can be a challenging time for many families, and we wanted to give our students the confidence and tools to prepare healthy meals themselves,” said Deb Arnold with Kern County Superintendent of Schools and Bakersfield North Rotary.  “This event was about so much more than cooking: it was about empowering kids, strengthening families, and showing what our community can accomplish when we work together.”

“Bakersfield North Rotary is proud to partner with Standard School District on an event that reflects Rotary’s core mission of service above self,” said BNR President Marvin Fuller.  “Seeing elementary students light up as they learned to cook, while their older peers stepped into mentorship roles, was exactly the kind of community impact we strive for.  We’re grateful to WinCo, the Blue Zones Project, Kern Family Health Care, and every volunteer who made this possible.”

The event reflects a shared commitment among Kern County organizations to address food access, nutrition education, and family wellness—especially during the summer months when school meal programs are unavailable to many students.
