Earlier this week, SLO Rotary had the privilege of recognizing four outstanding students from Laguna Middle School who were selected as winners in this year’s Four-Way Test Essay Program.
This year’s program saw an incredible response, with over 100 essays submitted. Each essay reflected thoughtful consideration of Rotary’s guiding principles—truth, fairness, goodwill, and benefit to all. Our committee carefully reviewed every submission and was deeply impressed by the maturity, insight, and authenticity demonstrated by these students.
One of the highlights of the recognition was hearing our district's second-place winner read her essay aloud at our meeting. Her words were a powerful reminder of the real challenges young people face today and the strength it takes to navigate them with honesty and courage. Her willingness to share her perspective reflected not only strong character, but also the kind of leadership Rotary seeks to inspire.

We are incredibly proud of all of our students, and particularly that one of our local students achieved 2nd place at the district level, an accomplishment that speaks to both her talent and the strength of participation from Laguna Middle School.
Programs like the Four-Way Test Essay Contest exemplify Rotary’s commitment to developing ethical leaders and engaging youth in meaningful reflection. Thank you to our committee members for their dedication in reviewing essays, and to the educators at Laguna Middle School for their continued partnership.
