The Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Compostela, Nayarit, proudly celebrated the grand opening of Parque de la Hermandad (Brotherhood Park) on March 27, 2026. This milestone marks the latest achievement in a sister-club relationship spanning more than 30 years—transforming a shared vision of inclusive play into a lasting community asset for the children and families of Compostela.

Designing for Every Child
More than a traditional playground, Parque de la Hermandad was intentionally designed as an inclusive space where children of all abilities can play side by side. The park features specialized equipment accessible to children with physical disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs, along with safety-surfaced play areas that promote both accessibility and security. By removing barriers to participation, the project reinforces a simple but powerful idea: play should be for everyone.

Project Funding and Impact
This project reflects a strong collaboration of local and Rotary resources. Funding was made possible through contributions from President’s Club funds, SLO Rotary Charities, and a District 5240 matching grant. The district grant component is supported by The Rotary Foundation, which returns a portion of donated funds to districts to support impactful local and international service projects.

Project funds supported the procurement and installation of inclusive playground equipment, site preparation, and safety surfacing. In addition, the club pursued a “Plus One” initiative—securing extra resources to add a third major piece of inclusive equipment, further enhancing the park’s accessibility and play value.

A Legacy of Cooperation
Located at Calzada Estación and Emiliano Manuel González, the park stands as more than a physical improvement—it is a symbol of enduring international partnership and shared commitment to service. The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together Rotarians and community members in celebration of what can be accomplished when local leadership and global support align.

As Rotary continues to focus on inclusion, community development, and international understanding, Parque de la Hermandad serves as a lasting reminder that our greatest impact comes from building not just infrastructure, but opportunity, connection, and belonging for all.
