Members of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise partnered once again with our sister club, Club Rotario Celaya Nat-Tha-Hi, to support a remarkable cataract surgery clinic in Celaya, Mexico.

48 cataract surgeries were successfully performed and several more complex surgeries scheduled for later dates. Four surgeons, one anesthesiologist, and two nurses generously volunteered their time and expertise to restore sight and improve quality of life for patients in need.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the eye campaign, interrupted only once during the COVID pandemic. The longstanding project continues to change lives through the dedication of Rotary members, medical professionals, and community volunteers.

Two club members traveled to Celaya to participate in the clinic and shared updates from the experience. Luz Maria Ortiz Smith, a former member of the Nat-Tha-Hi Rotary Club, assisted patients with post-surgery instructions while E. Russell Smith transported patients by wheelchair from the operating room to the recovery room.

Reflecting on the day, Luz Maria shared, “It was a moving experience being part of the miracle of restoring sight.” She also conveyed the gratitude of the Nat-Tha-Hi Rotary Club, saying, “Members of the Nat-Tha-Hi Rotary Club are grateful for our continuous support and friendship. They all send their love and appreciation.”

One patient’s story especially touched Luz Maria. Vicente, who is blind in both eyes, arrived at the clinic with the help of two neighbors because he has no family nearby. After surgery on one eye, Vicente worried about managing his recovery alone. At first hesitant, his neighbors ultimately agreed to stay with him overnight and drive him to his follow-up appointment after volunteers explained the importance of post-surgical care.

Through partnerships like this one, Rotary continues to build international friendships while transforming lives through service.
